Anno 1404 Wiki

(Look also at the building layout strategies page for more)

The only limiting factor in a Continuous game to the growth of your empire is the space you have available. Therefore, it is generally a good idea to use efficient layouts that optimally make use of the space on your islands. Still, it is often not the most efficient to only use square layouts, and learning when to use which layout is an art. This page contains a collection of layouts for Farm buildings and Production buildings that serve as a baseline for how these buildings can be placed. Layouts have loosely been sorted by progression and the number of Norias used. Layouts for Oriental Goods without Norias are designed to be used with Large norias.

Noria layouts[]

Creating Production layouts in the Orient is tricky because fields cannot be cultivated on Desert soil. The Small noria can turn the Desert fertile, but the radius is often too small to build entire layouts with just a single Small noria. The Large noria has a large enough radius that the previously discussed base layouts can be used, but this is only unlocked at 1040 Envoys, which is simply too late into the game. To still use the previously discussed layouts would require building multiple Small norias with overlapping Influence areas to reach every field. However, when a field is covered by multiple Norias, the productivity of that field can actually exceed 100%, meaning we might need less fields to still reach 100% overall productivity. This is referred to as the Noria exploit (though some argue it is an intended mechanic). The following layouts all use two Small norias, and have at least half of the standard required number of fields. This will be referred to as a minor Noria exploit.
